After intermission, we were treated to Cheryl Ann Fulton playing a harp modeled after one that is in a museum in Italy. The original harp is from the 1600's and was examined and even X-rayed by craftsman David Brown. He then hand crafted a replica made from Italian cypress wood. This lovely harp had triple rows of strings. The outer strings are parallel and tuned the same. The inner set of strings plays chromatic notes so Cheryl can go from D-minor to D-major with no levers or pedals. She said the trick is getting her fingers inside to do so! This particular harp had a very “sparkly” voice for the high notes as well as a rich low bass. It sounded very similar to a harpsichord in some ways. Cheryl actually changed some of the program to play an Italian piece since this harp is so suited for it and took us all back to 17th century Italy. She also played Bach’s Prelude at the end of her set, which in her words “sounds so much more dynamic on harp”.
