Sometimes Cui Junzhi plucked the strings with a pick tied to the harp with a red ribbon while at the same time strumming with the pads of her fingers. She was a very aggressive player and her music told several stories – of a courtesan whose emperor saw her for the first time without face makeup, a drunken warrior and other stories. The music was sometimes loud and wobbling and other times it was soft and expressive with a distinct Chinese flair. You can hear examples of this unique instrument here.
