Cui Junzhi and her Chinese Konghou Harp |
| |||||||||||||||||||
| The second set of music was something very rare to hear in the United States – a Chinese Konghou harp which was an important instrument used in the ancient Chinese court, played by Cui Junzhi, also known as Ginger. This ancient instrument was extinct, but was revived in the 1980’s after research by craftsmen and scholars. The interesting thing about this harp, besides the beautiful carved phoenix at its top is the fact that it is double-stringed (strings are parallel and strung from each side of the harp) and there are bridges for each string. By bending the string Cui Junzhi was able to change the tone of her playing, much like a guitar player can. Both rows of strings are tuned in unison and make for some dramatic music with strong rhythms.
