Lori Andrews explained a few things about the operation of her harp. There are seven pedals and each pedal has three different positions: up, middle and down. These pedals are manipulated to lengthen or shorten the strings and produce sharps and flats – think of a piano’s black and white keys. She also let us know that her harp strings are made from wire, gut AND nylon and can be very “temperamental” in that they can be easily affected by the weather, humidity, travel, etc. She joked that 50% of the time a harp player spends tuning their instrument and then the other 50% is playing out of tune. She also let us know that her harp cost $25,000 and was handcrafted in Chicago.

During Lori and Bart’s set the audience really interacted with the music that was being played. There were bouts of spontaneous clapping and a few exclamations. I was surprised no one jumped up to do a little dancing!
