Books and Materials for Topic 5

Icon Key and Explanations

Meet Kaya: An American Girl (American Girls Collection) (by Janet Beeler Shaw)

Most people are aware of the American Girl series of books so I won't bother to review it. They are marketed for girls, and my son found it boring. His sister, however (years ago), really loved it. If you have a boy you might want to focus more on chief Joseph and substitute with books from your library.

Topic 5

Welcome to Kaya's World 1764: Growing Up in a Native American Homeland (by Dottie Raymer)
This is an engaging beautifully illustrated and photographed book. It's really a feast for the eyes and conveys concepts in a way that sometimes only pictures can.
Christians: be aware that there is some "the earth our mother" type of language used and there is mention of "spirit guides" on pages 17 and 21.
I would get this title, even if your son isn't interested in the Kaya series of books. The pictures are worth it.

Topic 5

I Will Fight No More Forever [videorecording] / Wolper Productions ; produced by Stan Margulies ; written by Jeb Rosebrook and Theodore Strauss ; directed by Richard T. Heffron.

I have read that this movie is fairly accurate movie (although a couple of historical points are changed or left out). My boys really enjoyed it.

Topic 5

Plus previously mentioned on the page for Topic 1 books and materials:

History Pockets, Grades 1-3, Native Americans

Draw Write Now Book 3

The Indian Book
