We are big fans of beautifully illustrated books and that is one of the reasons why we really like the Maestro history books. We also like the fact that they explain history in an easy to understand way and enhance the understanding with maps and pictures that show what was going on. This book about the French and Indian wars set the stage for the rest of the books we read during this topic, including Indian Captive and made them so much better understood. This books is the framework you will flesh in with stories.

Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison (by Lois Lenski) 320 pages
This is an "authentic reconstruction" of the true story of Mary Jemison, a girl who was captured by the Seneca Indians during the time of the French and Indian War. We love Lois Lenski's illustrations (which are NOTHING like the cover) and her well written story of loss, adventure, and forgiveness. *Warning: There are a few minor references to "Indian spirituality".

This book is also based on a true story based on the journal of Susanna Johnson who was taken captive by the Abenaki Indians during the French and Indian wars in 1754.
