Feb
17 - "Engelbert Humperdinck's FREE Opera Hansel and Gretel at Lucie Stern
Theater Complex 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.
The performance will be
offered under a new program, which we have dubbed ORFEO (Outreach to Families
for Education about Opera) and we want to encourage the homeschool community to
participate. West Bay Opera has a long standing commitment to educating grade
students through the Opera in the Schools Program, known as OITS.
Each year,
OITS commissions a reduction of the score for an opera, so that it can be performed
in an abridged version, with piano. The typical OITS performance, which includes
costumes and simplified sets, lasts under an hour.
This year OITS will be
presenting its show to children in nearly 50 schools in the Peninsula. Children
participate in the OITS productions, and are typically assigned speaking parts.
The ORFEO program is an attempt to reach home-schooled children, so that they
too can become exposed to opera and develop a taste for it. It also provides an
opportunity to expose the parents to opera.
On Saturday, February 17, at 3:00
p.m., we will be hosting the ORFEO program at the Lucie Stern Theatre complex.
There will also be a fascinating behind-the-scenes technical demonstration using
the sets for Tchaikovsky' s "The Queen of Spades." The event is FREE of charge,
though there is a suggested donation amount of $5.00. Seating is limited.
FOR RESERVATIONS: Call the box office at: 650-424-9999."
