December 10 - Wednesday,
December 10 High School Winter Concert: Handel's Messiah with orchestra 7:30 p.m.
Los Banos High School Multi-Purpose Room Admission will be $6 for adults, $3 for
students
| November
26, 2008 On Wednesday, December 10, the Los Banos High School Choirs
will present their annual Winter Concert. This year, they will give their biennial
performance of Handels Messiah with orchestra. The concert will begin at
7:30 p.m. B In 1742, Georg Frederick Handel locked himself up in
his study for 24 days, after which, he emerged with the entire oratorio in hand.
Handel actually created the oratorio form, which is essentially a Baroque opera
without costumes and staging, as a genre to be performed during Advent and Lent,
when the Church did not allow operas to be presented. The masterpiece reached
its first major critical acclaim when it was performed for a Foundling Hospital
, i.e., orphanage, and the rest is history. Since 1996, the Choirs
have performed Handels Messiah every other year. These concerts used to
take place in St. Joseph s Catholic Church, but the choirs grew too large
to fit in the altar area, and the high school built its new Multi-Purpose Room,
so they were moved to the new campus facility in 2004. Choir alumni also join
the choirs, along with the Merced College Los Banos Choir. In order to
give the audience the most authentic rendering of this musical masterpiece, we
hire an orchestra of professionals. Handels original score calls for violins,
violas, cellos, basses, oboes, bassoon, and trumpets. Players include:
Dr. Ira Lehn, cello, who was the dean of the University of the Pacifics
Conservatory of Music in the late 70s and 80s Dr. Robert
Danziger, bassoon, the professor of bassoon at CSU Stanislaus. Ms.
Milka Kraleva, violin, originally from behind the Iron Curtain, where she was
not allowed to play religious music; she plays for the Townsend Opera Players.
Mrs. Allison Peltier, from Modesto , who also plays for the Townsend Opera
Players. Mr. Joe Tovar, violin, who has his music degree from CSU
Stanislaus. Mr. Dan Ijams, oboe, my college roommate, and the chairperson
of the Turlock City Schools Music; he has also taught oboe for CSU Stanislaus.
Mrs. Katrina Ijams, violin, Dans wife, who has her music degree from
San Francisco State . Dr. Don Carter, our local Ear, Nose, and Throat
specialist who plays Contrabass. Mrs. Donna Harrison, orchestra
instructor for Turlock City Schools Mrs. Carolyn Vierra, our local
pianist and organist. She has played nearly every Messiah with us from the very
beginning, Mr. Ivan Albertson, our beloved high school English teacher
who has also played Messiah with us from the beginning. Mr. Wes
Wing, a local graduate of Los Banos High School , Mr. Albertsons pupil,
will also be playing violin. Mr. Dustin Soiseth, a graduate of CSU
Stanislaus who has recently earned his masters degree in trumpet performance
and now teaches at Modesto Junior College . Mr. Colin Tamburri,
our local trumpet player and piano tuner, who spent most of his life making his
living as a professional trumpet player. This years
Messiah Soloists will be Mr. John Mondo, singing The Trumpet Shall Sound,
and our junior student, Lacie Stevenson, singing, He Shall Feed His Flock.
Advance tickets are now available from the choir students. Prices are: $6
General Admission $3 High School and Junior High Student Admission Also,
whenever we perform with a professional orchestra, we always welcome donations
toward the cost of the orchestra. All donors names are listed in the program.
If anyone is interested in making a financial contribution to the program, please
feel free to send it to: Los Banos High School Choirs c/o Tom Faria 1966
